Jacob deGrom has been anything but deGrominant for the New York Mets over his last two outings. Now, Terry Collins has stated the Mets are considering resting deGrom and skipping his next start. In his last two outings, deGrom has been whipped around to the tune of 25 hits, 13 ER(including 4HR’s) and only 8 K’s in 9.2 IP. History is on the Mets side. Last year in mid-September, after a 10 hit, 6-run outing against the Marlins at Citi, deGrom did not pitch again for 12 days. He returned to the mound in Cincinnati, striking out 9 over 6 innings of one run ball. If the Mets are gonna make any push in September, they need their ace to figure it out. If it means missing one start, then so be it. Seeing Sean Gilmartin take the mound isn’t exactly going to inspire the fanbase, but it’s still better than the sight of Jon Niese taking the mound again, in a Mets uniform.
Mets starters have a posted a 5.52ERA in their last 10 starts. Whatever Gilmartin does on the mound can’t be much worse than that. Gilmartin, or maybe Gabriel Ynoa, would possibly make a Monday night start against the Marlins at Citi. A Marlins team, without the services of Giancarlo Stanton, that has scored 11 runs in its last five games combined. Keep in mind that Stanton has been a one man wrecking crew when it comes to the Mets this season. With Stanton out, this is an ideal time for deGrom to rest and make his next start, most likely against the Nationals over Labor Day Weekend.
